Methodology for Assessing Subjective and Psychological Well-being through Fuzzy Logic: Application of the BIARE Survey in Mexico

Abstract
In recent years, it has become evident that economic indicators such as GDP and GNP are insufficient to capture societal well-being, which has led to the growing use of subjective measures focused on individuals' lived experiences. In this context, the present study approaches well-being from two complementary traditions: the hedonic perspective, represented by subjective well-being, and the eudaimonic perspective, associated with psychological well-being. The main objective is to propose a methodology for the comprehensive measurement of well-being through a fuzzy inference system (FIS), which employs rule-based structures that emulate human reasoning to integrate cognitive and affective evaluations, as well as multidimensional perceptions of psychological well-being based on Ryff’s model. The methodology is implemented using official well-being survey data from Mexico. As a result, a unique composite indicator of overall well-being is obtained, which has not previously been available in national statistics. The findings show high and stable levels over time, consistent with the homeostatic theory of well-being and Ryff’s model. Furthermore, the proposed approach aligns with OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) recommendations, contributing to a more comprehensive assessment of well-being.
