Managing disagreements over domestic standards in couple relationships: a typological proposal

Abstract
Examining how couples manage disagreements over domestic standards is essential to understanding the persistent gender gap in the division of household labor. Based on this, this research aims to build a typology of couples focused on analyzing the effects that such discrepancies cause in the distribution of tasks. From semi-structured interviews, three profiles of couples have been identified that show different ways of resolving disagreements about household organization. The results confirm that disagreements over standards affect task allocation. Likewise, it has also been observed that the way in which women and men internalize norms about household organization is conditioned by previous socialization in the family of origin. In conclusion, in all types of couples, the division of household chores was affected by differences in standards, except in those who shared similar criteria from the beginning of cohabitation or tended towards a high specialization in the division. Therefore, the difficulties in managing disagreements over domestic standards reveal one of the less visible aspects of the reproduction of gender inequalities.
